India won the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 by defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai on 9 March 2025. New Zealand scored 251 for seven, and India reached 254 for six with one over remaining. India was captained by Rohit Sharma. The victory made India the first team to win the Champions Trophy three times. The 2025 competition was the ninth edition of the tournament. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2025 was awarded to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt for explaining innovation-driven economic growth. Joel Mokyr received one half for identifying prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress. His work emphasised useful knowledge, explanations of why technologies work, and social openness to new ideas and change. Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt shared the other half for the theory of sustained growth through creative destruction. In this process, improved products and methods create value while making older technologies and firms less competitive. The laureates' work also shows that growth is not automatic. Innovation may face resistance from established interests, and the losses caused by economic transition require constructive management.

The third United Nations Ocean Conference was held in Nice, France, from 9 to 13 June 2025. France and Costa Rica co-hosted the conference, which sought to accelerate implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 on conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources. More than 170 countries adopted the political declaration "Our ocean, our future: united for urgent action." The declaration called for steps including expansion of marine protected areas, action against marine pollution, decarbonisation of maritime transport, and finance for vulnerable coastal and island nations. The political declaration together with voluntary commitments by States and other actors formed the Nice Ocean Action Plan. Voluntary commitments express pledged action, while the negotiated declaration records shared political agreement. The conference outcome requires implementation and monitoring. Announcing commitments does not by itself produce marine conservation.

The Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 was awarded to Hungarian author Laszlo Krasznahorkai. The Swedish Academy announced the award on 9 October 2025, recognising his compelling and visionary body of work that reaffirms the power of art amid apocalyptic terror. Krasznahorkai was born in 1954 in Gyula, Hungary. His first novel, Satantango, was published in 1985 and became his breakthrough work. It portrays residents of a declining collective farm before the fall of communism. His writing is associated with the Central European epic tradition, absurdism, and long, demanding sentences. Other work also reflects journeys to China and Japan and a more contemplative engagement with art and impermanence. The Literature Prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy. This differs from the Peace Prize, which is selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The 38th National Games of India were held in Uttarakhand from 28 January to 14 February 2025. The opening ceremony took place in Dehradun, and the Games concluded with a closing ceremony in Haldwani. The National Games bring together teams representing States, Union Territories, and Services. They provide multi-sport national competition and a platform for athletes across disciplines. Services topped the final medal table with 68 gold, 26 silver, and 27 bronze medals. Maharashtra followed Services in the standings. Medal tables rank teams primarily by gold medals rather than by the total number of medals alone. The event also promoted environmental measures and presented Uttarakhand as both a sporting and tourism destination. Hosting a major event, however, should be assessed through lasting facilities, athlete development, and public use rather than ceremonies alone.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 was awarded jointly to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit. Their experiments used a superconducting electrical system large enough to be held in the hand. The system could escape from one state to another through quantum tunnelling, as if crossing a barrier forbidden by classical physics. It also absorbed and emitted energy in discrete amounts. The work demonstrated quantum behaviour in a system far larger than a single particle. It contributed to foundations relevant to quantum computers, sensors, and cryptography. The prize was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on 7 October 2025 and was shared equally among the three laureates.
